It is a delightful cottage which is spacious and child friendly, yet cosy and relaxing, comfortably catering for all ages. Why not come and see for yourself?
The wood-burning stove and comfortable three piece suite in the lounge make this a cosy retreat. You will enjoy views across the unspoilt Elwick Bay on the south west corner of the peaceful island of Shapinsay. The cottage is in the conservation area of Balfour Village and was originally built in the late 18th century for workers at Balfour Castle. It is a terraced, single storey, listed building with a garden and private parking.
The cottage is just two minutes from the pier (with its frequent ferry service into Kirkwall on Mainland Orkney) and is close to all amenities on Shapinsay – including the local shop, restaurant, and boat hire.
Accommodation consists of one double & one twin bedroom, lounge, kitchen/dining area and a bath/shower room. The double bedroom is spacious and light with front and back facing windows. The cottage is well equipped with fridge, washing machine, microwave, DVD player and digital TV in the lounge; a cot and highchair are available on request.
The garden consists of a pretty flower border and a private grassy area – perfect for picnics with the kids or just a chance to relax and enjoy the fabulous sea view. There is a pebble beach at the bottom of the garden where you can sit and watch seals play. The cottage is near the only forest in Orkney and supports a wide variety of bird life. Balfour Castle itself is a major attraction and hosts many activities such as bird-watching expeditions, fishing trips, and more.
This accommodation on Shapinsay makes the perfect getaway.
